"We reached Sunbury lock at half past three. The river is sweetly pretty just there before you come to the gates, and the backwater is charming ..."
Jerome K Jerome made these observations in "Three Men in a Boat" in 1889, 33 years after Sunbury Lock was rebuilt. It is still an attractive spot today.
Sunbury Lock is unique in one respect, as the only location on this website that can't be accessed by foot. A car journey over Walton Bridge, followed by a long (albeit very pleasant) walk back along the towpath is the most common form of transport. Or, better still, hire a boat and take the short cut: Sunbury Lock is just 50m from the Phoenix!
