The first Sunbury regatta was held in 1877. On that occasion a famous "Son of Sunbury", Charles Lendy, was presented with the prize for the single punting event by his mother. The regatta has run every year since then, except during the two World Wars and in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In its current form, the regatta provides a great day out, with stalls, attractions, food and drink all available on Rivermead Island - to say nothing of the boats, of course.
After dark there is an illuminated sail-past. The finale always takes the form of a spectacular firework display visible from all along the river as far as King's Lawn.
